If someone in Metro Detroit tells you to go fly a kite, they’re not trying to get rid of you. They’re hoping you’ll join the Detroit Kite Festival.
This year, in the age of social distancing, the Detroit Kite Festival will become a regional event. Because of the pandemic, people who want to join in the annual festival are asked to take their kites around Detroit and nearby parks to enjoy some safe, health-conscious kite flying as a collective group.
Yup, it’s different. But it also promises to be fun. Each year, the Detroit Kite Festival hopes to uplift kite flying and creation “as a platform for radical inclusion, communal play, shared healing and the celebration of culture and history,” and 2020 truly needs more of all of that.
The event is scheduled to occur between the hours of 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. Sunday, July 12. Most of the event takes place on Belle Isle in a so-called normal year. This year, the festival organizers also hope people will join them across parks in many communities.
People are asked to bring their own kites to the event. Kites can be purchased online through the Detroit Kite Festival website or through retail stores as well as online vendors. Participants also are asked to bring their own food this year, looking at it as a chance to have a family picnic outside with people they love.
Entrance to the Festival is free. Drivers will need to pay for a recreation passport if they go onto Belle Isle or another state park. This costs $11.00/car and $5.oo/motorcycle for Michigan residents and $31.00 for non-Michigan residents. Once purchased, the recreation passport will allow you to visit the island unrestricted until your car registration is due.
Detroit Kite Festival is a 501(c)3 non-profit corporation. This event is 100% volunteer run by a group of Detroit-based kite enthusiasts. Donations are appreciated, but not necessary.
