For many Metro Detroit families, Taco Tuesday is a regular weekly event. But that day becomes even more special when Taco Tuesday falls on May 5, the annual celebration of Cinco de Mayo all around the tri-county area.
Detroit and its suburbs are full of tasty as well as traditional Mexican restaurants. There also are a variety of other delicious places to dine that represent so many nationalities from Cuba to El Salvador to Honduras to Puerto Rico to Venezuela.
Here are five places to try some of the many family-owned restaurants that are open for Taco Tuesday on Cinco de Mayo and offer carry-out options:
Taqueria El Nacimiento: This Detroit-based restaurant is beloved for its delicious and authentic Mexican cuisine. Fans say the food is offered in good-sized portion, has great servers and offers tasty dishes included huevos rancheros, carne asada and ceviche tostadas. Check out its to-go options as well.
Oaxaca: Oakland County is home to excellent restaurants, and Oaxaca ranks among the best of them. Its food is known for being fresh and plentiful. Local favorites include its burros and handmade tortillas for its authentic tacos. The interior is small, but it is open for takeout right now for a fun family treat.
M Cantina: Dearborn has truly enjoyed having this Nuevo Latino cuisine in town, and people are coming from all over Metro Detroit to try it. It offers gourmet tacos, tortas and tapas as well as a juice and smoothie bar that gets raves. The attitude is upscale but the style is casual, especially with its curbside pickup.
Taco Stand Taqueria: Allen Park has this hidden gem, and lots of people who travel here say they feel the trip is well worth it. The family-owned taco stand proudly provides food in the style of its home state of Jalisco, Mexico. The food is made quickly but has long-simmering flavor that will make everyone’s taste buds happy.
El Guanaco: You’ve got to search to find this tiny Clawson hot spot, but you’ll spot it when you start looking for the parking lot, which is typically full of cars. Its Latin cuisine is spot on, and that’s why people come by regularly for its great menu of Mexican and Salvadoran specials.
